Thread: Website Mistakes

  1. Website Mistakes

    Hi,

Let's discuss some mistakes many people make(so that we can benefit and not make the same mistakes).

    Two Common Mistakes I Find:

Browser Incompatibility- I can understand if the site is not 100% valid, but sometimes things like the float error is IE just mess things up badly.

No Contact Form- Most people do not have contact forms and they even forget to leave an email id.
    What mistakes do you hate?

    Cheers!

I think browser thingy is not a big deal (if we are talking about not getting it to work in IE6 :P. but if a website works in all IEs but no other browser I'll kick the shit out of the developer).

Another mistake: thinking you can design a website even while not being a designer.

No contact or / and about page is fucked up to. Most new sites I visit and don't really show what they do / are / want, I want to visit their about page first and read the goals of the site. If that isn't available I most likely end up still not knowing what the site is about and leaving and never coming back. It's sad but true... On the other hand, if the site just shows what it does with it's content, I stick around faster.

    those are my 2 cents...

So, when you designed your first website, you didn't think it was amazing? I know I thought mine was.

Just because somebody might not be as good as you are, doesn't make them any less of a designer.

Nope. I knew I was an amateur and it looked like crap compared to what already was on the web. Oh and back then sites didn't look as fancy :P
But the punchline is: you know it isn't good looking. it might be the best you can do and you can be very proud of it. but this, you are no prof designer

yes i also hate if there is no contact form. I'm ever join into one contest, and i find there is other participant cheating, i wanna report it but there is no contact form.

About browser compability, it's rarely happen to me

No branding is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. You need to CUSTOMIZE if you go for a free template, or hire a designer. At least get a nice logo made up or something.

Contact information is definitely a must. At the minimum, you need name and email.

another design problem again? even we're already know by read some literature on internet, that design is not a problem? All important thing is content.

But in case you make design-related site, yes, design is important.

Another mistake from me : no detailed FAQ
I find some site, which have no detailed FAQ. The site is member system, and run some program in way making money. So, detail FAQ is definitely needed, right? When there is no detail FAQ, don't blame user when their do mistake.

Browser incompatibility, mailto links and common templates are annoying.

'Under Construction' pages are a total turn-off.
