You are right. It is no accident. Sun Micro Systems developed Java, which was originally intended to be a home controller. It failed at that and was then positioned to the the primary web development language. It also failed at that because it was way too slow and incurred too much overhead at a time when most web users were connected with dial-up modems. Meanwhile, Netscape developed JavaScript and admittedly used the name because at the time, Java was supposed to take over the Internet and the name was very popular. They copied a similar syntax and added an interpreter to the Netscape browser. They are still two different languages developed by different companies and they serve different purposes.
Java eventually found its home in enterprise systems development. It works very well for that.
