    Anyways, here are some sites for you. May be you find them useful

    1. Vector Logo Database - Free Logo (Doesn't allow you to create a custom logo but is good if you are looking for ready made ones)

    2. FREE Logo Maker - FREE Logo Creator - FREE Online Logo Design (This site is really good. I have used it lot of times. You can create a logo for yourself as well as download it. However, you cannot get the source copy.)

    3. Create FREE Flash website logos or Flash headers online - Download LogoWizard website logo builder - Free Flash Logos.com (A random site if you are looking for simple logos)

    Although not specifically for logos or banners but Inkscape helps a lot.

    I would use illustrator and photoshop (CS4) for a logo. If you build the logo in illustrator you can blow it up to any scale and not lose resolution.

    Do a google search for a program called "photoscape" - its free, easy to use and is able to do just everything you need to make a logo or a header.
