I've used .info domains before and they definitely serve a purpose. I've used them for stuff that I don't need to "sell" - i.e. a friend has a baseball site that he posts tournament info on, so the .info is very appropriate. I've also used them as a cheap alternative to a .com when the .com I want is taken, but usually this is on a flip. With the right SEO and marketing, it would not matter the extension.
