I believe that every webmaster should read customer hosting reviews of the company he/she is going to deal with before making any final order.

I think the following are the most important ones:

a). Reviews of that hosting company
b). Web Space / Data Transfer
c). Types of servers / VPS that hosting company possesses
    d). Easy-to-use hosting panel

The most difficult thing is gauging the level of support you will receive.

Recently my current host did a server migration that they claimed would run smoothly. I felt confident given the nature of their usually quick support that if anything did go wrong it would get fixed quickly.

The server migration DID go wrong, and my site was offline for over a week. Which is basically an absolute travesty. What they had ended up doing, which wasn't my fault, was they put a redirect to a parked domain in the config file, as the first line of code. Everyone missed it until the issue got escalated. The higher powers found it in 5 minutes and a weeks worth of chasing my tail was fixed by removing one line of hosting code.

Be very careful when selecting a host that wants you to migrate servers and is forcing you off old hardware that they are going to shutdown. It's almost better to jump ship and be in control on a new host, than go through a migration. I've been through plenty and none of them ever go smoothly.

Hah...Yes, be damn careful when your host wants to migrate you to new servers, etc.!
I went through the same a a couple months back.
    LOST EVERYTHING!
    No freaking apologies either!
This person is still on forums selling his hosting service.

But I did have backups that were only about a week behind when all this happened.
So though the lost all my sites, databases, I did have a week old backup!

So, when your host company sends you a message that they will upgrade your account?
Right then and there, DO BACKUPS!!!!

And never rely on a host company to have a backup of your sites!
Regardless of who they are and what they say!
