Thread: Looking for web hosting....

Question Looking for web hosting.... like trying to find the absolute correct HD TV. Maddening.

I'm a noob to everything website (other than browsing). I'm looking to set up a Wordpress blog to learn and maybe some decent affiliate sites (with meaningful content) after I get my feet wet. Eventually, i'd like to create a full blown website with a specific targeted niche, complete with a forum, etc. First thing's first though....i've purchased a domain name through 1&1. I actually attempted to get hosting through them, but I got the following error message:

Important Information: Switching to an MS Hosting Package

    * Scripting PHP,Perl and Python are not supported and will not work in a Microsoft-based Hosting package. Make sure that your website does not use any of these.
    * Database Linux Hosting packages use a MySQL database rather than the MS SQL database available in the Microsoft-based Developer package. Your data will not be migrated.
    * 1&1 Applications Please make a copy of all data in your 1&1 Website Applications and Communication Tools before switching your package. Applications found in your Control Panel, for example WebDatabase, are not stored cross platform.
    * Webspace The content of your web space will not be moved to your new package. You will need to upload website files again in your new package. Please make sure to have a local copy saved.

To me, this reads as if i'm "switching" to a Microsoft hosting package (i'm running MS XP), then states that PHP is not supported. Am I not understanding that correctly? Doesn't PHP have to be supported for me to run Wordpress?

Anyway, I backed out of it and am currently researching some other hosting sites. In looking at the sites suggested by WordPress, I like MediaTemple the best as it doesn't appear to hit you with extra costs, and provides a high quality service. Is that a good estimation? It's a bit expensive for what I want to do right now, but i'm willing to put a little money up now in order to purchase better hosting.

Should I go with my gut, or does anyone have other suggestions?

    Thanks for your time.

First I think you trying for the wrong package. You would want a linux hosting package. PHP & MySQL are both required for wordpress which are all standard on a Linux hosting plan.

If your just learning you can hunt down a .01 coupon for hostgator and pay one cent for your first month and like 9.95 every month after that. Or you can find a cheaper one on hostgator.

Also if your not planing full blown website you could ask a member for a space on there server if you dont require much I am sure someone can spare some room for a month or so and maybe work out a monthly fee with them.

  3. #3's the host we're talking...not me. That makes a ton more sense.

Right after I posted this, a buddy of mine emailed and did exactly what you suggested...shared space. Good option for a beginner for sure.

    LOVE the avatar.

I hate to break the news to ya, but that prolly wasn't the best possible first move. It's going to take you hours if you decide to change domain register (for that particular domain) and you're probably going to experience credit card charging problems (i.e. them continuing to charge your credit card for expenses that the domain may incur, even after having transferred the domain elsewhere/to someone else's 1&1 account).

NameCheap would have been a good choice.

Ahhhh....fantastic. I did a Google search for "better than 1&1" and got a few bad reviews, but virtually everything has a few bad ones. I'll be trying to transfer the domain name later this evening, so I guess we'll see how that goes. My wife watches our card accounts like a hawk, so i'm POSITIVE she'll let me know if there's extra charges ("I swear honey, 1&1 must have charged that case of tequila at our local liquor store!!!").

The server i'll be sharing is with InMotion. I think i'll go Google "InMotion nightmare".....

Thanks to everyone for the heads up on the 1&1 crookedness.

I think 1and1 Hosting Reviews - Read 1and1 Hosting Web Hosting Reviews at sums up 1&1 pretty nicely.

I would suggest you find a hosting company you like and doesn't blatantly oversell and search for some reviews for them and if they sound alright go ahead with them.
