Unable to track down a 404 error

I'm having an issue figuring out a 404 error I'm getting a lot.

    An example:

    The error.log:
[Thu Aug 19 11:21:48 2010] [error] [client 204.236.103.28] File does not exist: /var/www/www.parkinggames.net/htdocs/play/4, referer: http://www.parkinggames.net/play/4/Park-Master-2.html

    Access.log:
    204.236.103.28 - - [19/Aug/2010:11:21:47 -0500] "GET /play/4/Park-Master-2.html HTTP/1.1" 200 5083 "http://www.parkinggames.net/play/18/Truck-Stop-Parking.html" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; GTB6.5; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0; AskTB5.6)"
    204.236.103.28 - - [19/Aug/2010:11:21:48 -0500] "GET /images/sad.gif HTTP/1.1" 200 880 "http://www.parkinggames.net/play/4/Park-Master-2.html" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; GTB6.5; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0; AskTB5.6)"
    204.236.103.28 - - [19/Aug/2010:11:21:48 -0500] "GET /play/4/ HTTP/1.1" 404 180 "http://www.parkinggames.net/play/4/Park-Master-2.html" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; GTB6.5; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0; AskTB5.6)"

    Awstats:
    http://www.nux.net/img/8b1dcc1f391047fb6809598b2a81bd6e.png

So you can see it happens a lot.

I've seen it happen in IE7 and IE8 so it doesn't seem to be specific to just IE6 or a single browser.

If someone could take a look at it that would be awesome. I've tried a couple times to figure it out, and a lot more looking now and just unable to find it.

    Thanks,

Well the 404 error means file not found, but since you are likely using .htaccess to rewrite URLs and the pages are served up from a database, I think your issue may be down to the capability of your hosting account to deliver the pages in a timely manner, like you may need to upgrade to a dedicated server.

    Just an idea.

I know 404 is page not found. What I'm trying to figure out is what's requesting the file on the page. Maybe something is requesting "" instead of "/" or "./" who knows.

The server running this site is fine. Load is low and I've easily served 20k visits a day to similar sites. This is still new at around 500. BTW this is on a dedicated server I run/manage.

Anyone have any thoughts? I'm hoping someone has seen something like this before.

I can't find anything in the html that would cause this. So either I missed something or it's some CSS/JS.

Also this doesn't happen on every page load. Just a lot....Quite frustrating.

It doesn't seem to be causing any issues for the users, but it sure does mess up my logs so my normal analysis of 404s and other errors is quite a bit more difficult.

    Thanks,

nux, is it the same IP address or the same IP of 204.236.103.28 all the time? Does it appear to be different users or is it possibly one bad bot that's trying to hit the site like that?

If it's all one IP then I would ban that IP or the class C block of that IP and see if it stops.

The awstats log shows hundreds of the errors. The errors happen from many different IPs. I am confident it's not hackers or whatever trying to exploit anything.

I just crawled the site and there aren't any links to those pages. Looks to me like OfficeLiveConnector.1.3 might be the culprit. Search google for "OfficeLiveConnector.1.3" and you'll see what I mean.

I looked at that but wasn't able to see how it could cause the issue I'm having. Can you go into that a bit more please?

    Thanks
