Why don't proxy list owners just clean there list every now and than?
I would do it ;) (If somebody wants me to do it for a bit of money, I would love to help, as it can help me too (more traffic to my proxies instead))

Another option is to automate the process. At some point I'd like to implement it into a web interface, but for now I've built a php script that checks a text file of proxies. It checks to see if they're alive and also checks to see if there's a backlink present.
If anyone is interested in this let me know. Keep in mind that I am, what I consider, an amateur programmer and the script may be a mess, but it works. lol
Well Will, you've provided the proxy community with a valuable resource. The least I can do is give you this script:
http://nux.net/scripts/proxy-check.php.txt
I generally run it from inside a screen (it can take a while to process) from the command line.
This may not be exactly what you're looking for. This simply outputs bad proxies to a file, and good to another. It could be modified pretty easily to run SQL instead, or do any other operations.
Hope it helps.
As nice of a gesture as that is. The only effective way to do this on a large scale is using cron to auto check the sites and sets them inactive if no link is found then removed from the list but not the database. With time constraints and the fact its free service the less work the better.
I dont have near the amount he has and I would have already quit if I had to manually do this.
Well, I have the structure for the script put together. I have been meaning on implementing something like this myself. Maybe I could put something together this afternoon. If not sometime this week.
It may be tricky writing it to be generic enough to interface with other proxy listing sites. My site (drproxies.com) was written from scratch so I'm sure the database structure is different...maybe just a setting for sql to run if it finds a bad one.
Anyways....I think I'll put something like this together. As I have just finished, but not launched, my third listing site. Would save a lot of time to automate this process.
