My Apache web server has MaxMind GeoIP for geotargeting. It also has basic proxy detection. Better proxy detection can be added to it for $5 per month. I have not purchased the add-on but I might just for a few sites and for some of my hosting customers who want that. Once it detects a proxy you can either block OR redirect.

And, if you are able to actually read the post via a proxy, please post a comment in the blog so I can see how/why you were able to.
Nice article and great advice but your methods are extremely work intensive.

Although some webmasters/sites do not care about receiving proxy traffic, I can assure you there are a lot of people who do. Some examples are e-commerce sites, forums, bloggers, and even proxy webmasters(i.e. proxy chaining).

That is not an entirely accurate statement. A lot of bots and proxies come through data center ranges, depending on the type. I agree it is a great idea to block SOCKS proxies.

Which would be far more righteous and probably give you better safictation knowing your put the scumbag threw some costly legal trouble!. LOL
Seems like a lot of work when you can easily block the user and the proxies they may try to use to circumvent the ban.

I can see how it may be frustrating to block them using the wrong tools but blocking proxies is certainly not pointless.

How many other legitimate visitors have you inadvertently blocked I wonder?
Agreed. Since proxies are used heavily in some networks(AOL, satellite, dial-up), it is important not to create false positives by blocking too much. Again, it's about using the right tool for the job.

Maxmind's tool is great but it will not defend against all types of proxies like Tor, VPNs, or web based proxy sites.
Block Proxies, Bots, Filtering Companies, Scrapers, and more with BlockScript.
