    BLOCKING proxies

I know you guys are usually talking about new proxies, etc, but many of us webmasters/community owners are always looking for ways to BLOCK proxies.. I've posted a small article in my blog about some ways to block proxies - please give it a read and see what i've missed. And, if you are able to actually read the post via a proxy, please post a comment in the blog so I can see how/why you were able to.

I find the only site owners who block proxy sites are usualy small time site owners near or around 100,000 Alexa rank doing it out of some personal reason of being against someone being able to be anonymous on their site. Sites like Facebook don't block proxies. You would think they would a troll epidemic?

Spammers and bots dont come threw datacenter ranges, Datacenters have to hold accountable of whats going with their network and would not allow that, hardcore Spammers use Socks proxies from places like
http://proxy4free.com/page1.html . Majority of those aren't from Datacenter IP ranges. There from accidentally left open proxies on residential IP addresses.

We (like many community owners) have had issues with Trolls. Ours was so severe we've lost several members and it just upsets the whole harmonious balance of the community.. it's really just a way to keep out the riff-raff..

If you really had trouble with a particular troll. You could contact the abuse Email on the Whois IP contact details. They will forward the complaint to the person who is using the IPs. The owner might be able to help and give you the real IP of the offender so that you can possible file criminal complaint to the Police and their ISP for harassment. Which would be far more righteous and probably give you better safictation knowing your put the scumbag threw some costly legal trouble!. LOL

Ya.. That is just such a hassle though when they're coming in via a different proxy every 2 minutes, or via TOR ..
It's FAR easier to force them to connect from home, by blocking all alternative methods (proxies) and file a complaint with their home ISP.. but, by blocking all the alternatives, they arent brave enough to connect from home, and they just go away.

Well you have me blocked too, I am in the UK.

I read your post using Google Cache, didn't bother to try with web proxies as GC usually does the job.

First of all I will start by saying you shouldn't really be giving out advice on how to block traffic via any method unless you really know what you are doing. Please don't take offense but coming in from the UK which is not an known spamming country and the fact that I have never visited your site before, I didn't really expect to be blocked from accessing it. So either you made a mistake or by some coincidence there is someone spamming you on the same IP range as I am currently on with my ISP.

As far as blocking proxies goes, it is really just a pointless exercise. There are so many out there and new ones popping up every day that you will always be chasing your tail. Your allowing a spammer to waste all your time on implementing blocking practices which are preventing legitimate people (Me!) from being able to access your site. How many other legitimate visitors have you inadvertently blocked I wonder?

Thanks AZ .. i dont give advice in my blog, i only relay what i've done - wrong or right..

You are right though about wasting time, and i dont spend that much time at all on it now that i've got a good swath of hosts blocked which takes care many/most of the web-proxies.. the automated system takes care of much of the rest..

i am concerned about you being blocked though, so i'll send you a PM and ask for your IP (or the first 3 octets); so i can see where i fu&ked up..
