Can any tell me a good application to use as web proxy? Been trying to understand how web proxy works for an organization and want to establish one.
Web proxies we discuss here are used to unblock sites. Many of these proxies run the Glype 1.1 script which you can obtain from ww.Glype.com.
However, the origin of Proxy is rather caching websites for faster access and bandwidth consumption reduction.
Such a proxy for instance is built-in Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS).
More about it can be found in www.iis.net/overview, see Dynamic Caching and Compression.
If it's for personal use then a proxy script might be ok, or check out some of the Proxy software options on a file download site like softpedia. Take note that all the web proxy scripts available have leaks of some kind with certain sites and configurations, so don't expect to be fully anonymous using a script.
If it's for a business with many computers on the network take a look into using something like Squid which is free, and there are quite a lot of enterprise level proxy applications.
What type of proxy you use all depends on your needs. Squid or the Glype proxy script will let you filter sites and view the cache of files if you have that option enabled.
There's a good discussion of available software options / services here:
