    Where to start...

Let's imagine that someone approaches you and asks, "I want to get into the proxy niche. Where do I begin?" What would you tell them? I mean, obviously you need to get a domain name, hosting and a script - but what kind of domain name? .info? Hosting... regular shared hosting won't work, so what should they look for? What about a script, what kind is the fastest? Most efficient?

You see what I'm saying? People that are new to the proxy niche might feel a bit overwhelmed with a lot of the options and avenues available. So what advice and/or tips would you offer someone?

I would tell them to go to these places:

Discuss Proxy - Proxy Webmaster Discussion Forum
WebEvader Proxy Forums - The Proxy Webmaster Forum
    Web Proxy Forum
    Web Proxies - Net Builders

    And lastly here:

All you have to do is search the forums, read the threads and if you get stuck just ask a question on them.
But if you don't like forums just buy an ebook, such as "The ultimate proxy guide"... You should also go here

Starting a proxy isn't about set & forget. Yes, you can do the set & forget method like I'm doing now because of all the proxies, but that's something nobody should do.

Now that I have over 4 years of knowledge about proxies, I'm ready to answer questions related to proxies -- but even with all the things I know there are still a lot of things I don't know myself

  5. I'd point them at the Guides for New Proxy Owners sticky.
Submit Your Webmaster Related Sites to the NB Directory
I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

For someone thats just starting out... Be aware that proxies are considered by many "people?" to be nothing more than illegal hacking tools and you may run into legal or business difficulties because of this in your new proxy startup.

Good example when hidemyass had problems recently with paypal:

Under the Acceptable Use Policy, PayPal may not be used to send or receive payments for items that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity.

We are hereby notifying you that, after a recent review of your account
activity, it has been determined that you are in violation of PayPal's
Acceptable Use Policy regarding your sales on
ref: - Forum - Paypal suspended my account due to web proxy

Be prepared for abuse I guess. Learn how to protect your proxy, learn how to restrict abuse. The kind of people proxies will attract may vary, sooner or later there will be someone who want's to try and abuse the proxy in some way. Be ready for it.

Just two abuse cases I could remember reading awhile ago: Forum - Being accused of fraud? Forum - user abuse that gets your hosting acct suspended

I've had my site shutdown twice now in the last few months because of fraudulent abuse reports. Phishtank has some really big problems with wrongly targeting and shutting down legit proxy sites instead of the actual phishing sites.

This old thread also had some useful startup tips too.

Hosting is without a doubt the number one most important factor to being successful, when you first start up and in the long term, because when you choose that wrong everything else will suffer.
