install litespeed web server Free Edition and Get Rid Of Apache!
Yeah, apache crashed for me a lot, I installed litespeed as recommended by haynes. Not had a crash since :)
Nginx and ligthtpd with fastcgi also crashed a lot with me for my proxies...

If you decide to install litespeed, you will need to update it to use php5, rather than php4.
