Any good WordPress newsletter signup plugins?

I'm getting drafted into doing a free WordPress site for a school. They want a newsletter signup feature. I am aware of AWeber and other subscription services, but they do not have any funds for this project. I am looking for a free solution.

I see several plugins that add newsletter signups, but most look like they are either abandonned or cost several hundred dollars. Does anyone know of any good free plugins that will handle this?

Just recently I faced a problem,I had to create a script for a contest which would send a email to all the contestants that register and have a back end for managing and exporting the users to csv.I considered to somehow mod wordpress for the task but in the end i found a great newsletter script for the task, maybe if you cant find a plugin, this could be a alternative.

MailChimp is free until you hit a certain level. Definitely might work with your project though and they have a WP plugin:

MailChimp might be a good solution. I didn't know that they have a WordPress plugin. MailChimp is free for up to 500 subscribers.

Another is to just create a small form in the sidebar using Contact Form 7 or another e-mail form plugin. That solution lacks an e-mail management system, but it does allow you to collect contact information.

Subscribe2 is also a newsletter plugin:

I have used it in the past. Pretty cool if you don't want to try something external (like MailChimp).
