Media Library Stopped Working in WordPress 3.5.1

Seems like I am not alone in having this problem where images from the media library could not be inserted into posts since the images vanished.

As usual there were lots of tips and advice on the WordPress forums about disabling plugins and what not, even the thread being closed having "solved" the problem, and re-opened, but all of it was useless information. Some people rolled back their WP version to an earlier one.

The fix for me was to freshly install WordPress in my test environment.

Are the images physically removed from the uploads directory, or just missing from the Media Library?

There are other strange things happening that may be related to the current brute force attack. No one seems to know what the goal of this attack is, but there are over 90,000 attacker IPs involved. This indicates a huge botnet of attacking IPs. I have had over 14,000 brute force hack attempts on one of my sites since that began.

I've seen a new user named sysadmin@worrdpress.org installed on some sites. I think that is a backdoor that the attack installs that lets a hacker in at a later date.

I had this problem on my local machine test blog, so nothing to do with brute force attacks. The problem was caused by automatically updating the script to version 3.5.1 in the control panel. The images are all there and observable in the media page. But when I went to insert an image into a post, no images were available.

Ahhhh, another automatic update issue. I have found the automatic update process to be a bit unreliable, so I always do manual updates and overwrite the WordPress core files. That may be why I have not seen it.

After searching the web, it looks like this has been an intermittent problem since about WordPress 3.0.
