When I try to change the format of my permalinks it says this
If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.
But the problem is when I look on my server I dont see an .htaccess file at all. So what do I do?
Create it and move it through FTP to your site,
Paste the code in it WP say you.
Go to save
Pick all files from dropdown box bellow filename
Type filename .htaccess
Upload that file to your public_html folder.
we can do via cpanel online, click on newfile menu at top left corner, paste your code and save it. :)

so better to find file by using ftp client like filezilla and then download, edit and then reupload. :)
If he have custom htaccess the he would probably dont ask this question...

Thanks for the input, now that I have done this the links work if you click the direct one to my articles. But if you click the particular category it shows that the files can not be found. Before I switched when one clicked on the categories it showed all the articles that were written and I posted in that particular category. The URL is http://redpundit.com and the categories are words on the blue menu, you can see what I mean. Thanks
Did you copied exact what wordpress gave you?
Yeah, I copied it exactly and pasted it into notepad
do you use custom structure and if yes can we get your code for it?
or you using one of predefined permalinks structures?
can you chmod htacces to 777 then resave permalinks structure
and then chmod htaccess back to 644?
I just figured it out, when you mentioned custom structure I realized I need to add the %category% in front of what I already had. Thanks
