Really basic things that should be sorted out in the core engine code IMO. Watch out WordPress, better scripts are coming!

I met several members of the WordPress development team at WordCamp a few years ago. All of them appear to be in their 20s and tend to work long hours while sucking on coffee beans and downing large quantities of energy drinks. That part is their choice, but they are also focused on adding bleeding-edge features that almost no one really wants or will use. These people are thrilled by a new challenge to add more bells and whistles.

They should have added the ability to change the login location years ago. It is not hard to do.

They should also have added many of the basic features that you pointed out. There are certain features that they leave to the plugin developers, but that leads to compatibility issues among plugins.

Why does it need a cache plugin? Because it is slow.
Why does it need a contact form plugin? Because you cannot easily edit the HTML of your site - you have to do it via an admin GUI
Why are SEO plugins needed? Because SEO was never a consideration from the beginning.
Why are security plugins needed? Because lots of miscellaneous developers are working on the code and introducing security holes.
Why are Google XML Sitemaps Plugins needed? They are not needed.

That is fine, but I am going to mess them up. Been developing kick-ass code for websites. Speed Site 2.0

A little code snippet for you:

    PHP Code:
// We implement a very simple captcha system, since even images will be decrypted given enough effort by the hacker

    $_SESSION['captcha'] = substr(md5(time()), 0rand(68)); // 6 to 8 random characters

70 plugins? 10 plugins is a lot and will start to slow a site down. Are you sure you need 70?

FYI. All plugins get loaded every time someone requests a web page--even if the plugin is not activated.

I do find myself always installing the same set of plugins on every wordpress install I do. It would be nice to have several of the most comment features in the core itself which would surely help cut down on the overhead to our servers.

That was a demonstration of simple code. Something long forgotten in the world of WordPress plugins land where you may feel the need for 70 plugins to get your site functional.

If I remember correctly, a lot of SonnyCool's plugins are ones he has written due to some of the unique things he does with his site(s)

Not sure why he doesn't embed directly into the code unless its to help him reuse across multiple sites...but Sonny definitely deals with large-extremely large databases for his work.

Yeah, I am aware that he has some very large sites, but 70 plugins is a large strain on any WordPress installation.

Just about anything you can put in a plugin you can embed in the functions.php file and some other theme files and it will run more efficiently.
