Thread: Updating a Wordpress Theme How to

Hi,

I like my wordpress themes and I don't wish to change them.

However when I did the last update, for some reason things in the admin are not working anymore.

Also things on the theme are not working or not showing up.

What do I need to do to upgrade and older theme so it works with the current wp?

If it is a free wordpress theme?
See if it was updated.
If not you have to get another theme.
If it is a theme you had coded for you, then it has to be coded for the new version of wp.
With all that said, I see that more and more wordpress themes coming out are coded for future versions of wp.
Either that or wordpress is being kinder to newer versions of wp themes.

Can you get into admin side?
If so, switch theme to the default (twenty 10).
If all works great with default but not with the theme you are using, then the theme is whacked out and needs to be replaced.

The last 3 or 4 or 5 rounds of wordpress updates, I was lucky or something in that all themes came out okay.

A theme can fail with a WordPress update, but that should not affect anything in the admin area unless it is directly related to the theme.

If you are having admin problem, it could be that the update failed. I gave up using the automated update process due to too many failures. Try using an FTP utility and manually copy all of the files to the WordPress site.

If that does not fix the problem, try switching to another theme, as iowadawg indicated. The current version of TwentyTen would be a good test.

I did the autoupdate and it says all was OK.

Will try both ideas here and see what happens. It is not letting me change/edit the tags after I enter them the first time on one site they are not appearing after you hit publish to edit and won't let me add more. On another site the gray bar is not showing up at the top with the admin controls only a blank space where it should be. On the last site I can't add a picture unless I manually place the code in it.

3 different sites 3 different problems.

On the one site the theme was coded for me about 2 years ago so I don't want to change the theme if that is the problem. I will need to find away to update it and add whatever code it might be missing.

It's possible for a theme to affect the admin area if it makes use of related functions that no longer exist, so you could backup the theme to your hard drive, then delete it from your hosting. Then login to your WP admin.

Doing a simple test by switching to the current TwentyTen theme will tell you if the problem is related to the theme.

I don't trust the WordPress auto update. I've seen intermittent problems with it for well over a year.
