    WordPress 3.5

WordPress 3.5 was released on December 11, 2012. I just did my first install.

It looks like another release chocked full of useless bells and whistles. There is a new theme called TwentyTwelve 1.1. It is a much more plain Jane theme than TwentyTen or TwentyEleven. The theme uses rems, rather than pixels as the unit of measure. It looks like another grandiose experiment.

I primarily use TwentyTen as the basis for custom sites, which I found to be a rock solid theme.

In my opinion, TwentyEleven was so loaded with useless bells and whistles that it was the equivalent of ten pounds of crap in a five-pound sack. It also runs slower than TwentyTen.

After using CSS for the past 10+ years, I did not even know that there is a rem unit of measure. I will have to build a site with TwentyTwelve before I pass judgement on this one. I see that Simple Pie has been added to the wp-includes directory, but I do not know how it is being utilized.

At this point, I do not see any benefits with the new release. Please toss your two cents worth in if you see something worthwhile.

I do not like the new freaking way of getting pictures from my computer to input in my posts.
    Takes an extra step now.
But one thing it does is load up all the pictures presently uploaded (I have yet to stick around long enough to see how far back in time this goes on or if it takes ALL pictures from day one).

    Yes, I like 2010 better.

The WordPress team must have never heard the old mantra, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it."

The dashboard now opens up with a Customize Your Site button. That will confuse clients when I build a new custom site, so I need to find a way to disable that.

They are referring to this update and theme as, "chock-full of goodies to delight bloggers and developers alike.' Nothing about it thus far delights me. I have not found a single useful feature.

It looks like there is a lot of heat being generated over the move to rem (stands for "root em"). rem is a CCS3 only feature that is not compatible with older browsers. It requires a calculation to determine font sizes and due to the incompatibility issues, also requires using a fallback px declaration. In other words, it requires more CSS code. What is the point?

I'm still waiting for WordPress to allow us to change the login location to increase security. That would be a useful feature.

Now, if we could just get them to quit adding bells and whistles and just make WordPress SEO-friendly out-of-the-box!

    That would be worthwhile.

I have not yet found even a single "improvement" that is useful.

The key here is the word Old LOL

I heard it as "If it works, don't fix it." Somehow with the young generation the motto is "Update, update, update, tweak, and make faster. Then we'll fix all the bug later."

All programmers are taught, from day one, going back to WWII, to always make sure there is something in the code that must be fixed.
Thus, programmers learn to always tinker with code, regardless of how good the code is.
For somewhere in any code is a bug and only by constantly coding more and more can that bug be splattered.

Oh, and I consider sami4u a member of the young generation....bhahahahhaa

There are a lot of variations of the "if it ain't broken" mantra, but the moral of the story is that when you try to fix something that is not broken, you are more likely to break it.

What gets me about this update is the claim, "chock-full of goodies to delight bloggers and developers alike." Where? What are they? Show me at least one. This release is more of a grandiose experiment than anything else. There is nothing in here that either bloggers or developers would even ask for.

I always say that the WordPress team is made up of a lot of twenty-something programmers who are very smart, but not always brilliant. This release proves that.

If you have ever attended Word Camp, you will find that most of the team volunteers are type AA personalities who like to do all-nighters while sluging down a case of their favorite energy drink and sucking on coffee beans. These guys and gals are really motivated, but perhaps they are running out of ideas and are too motivated.
