    WordPress 3.7 Has Been Released

WordPress 3.7 is out, but with a disturbing change. The core files are automatically updated whenever a new release is launched. It looks like this will disable sites if the update fails. I have seen that happen several times with clients' sites.

If you want to disable automatic updates, here are the various methods to use.

The definitive guide to disabling auto updates in WordPress 3.7

If you have never seen it happen, when an automatic update fails, the entire site goes down with the message: "Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance. Check Back in a Minute." displayed on every page. Re-running the update rarely works. The only fix is to remove a file named .maintenance in the root directory.

The disabling instructions are poorly written, especially for someone without tech skills. I am not even sure which is the best method to use, but from reading through the page, it looks like using method #4 an adding the code to the wp-config.php file is the easiest.

    Code:
    # Disables all core updates:
    define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', false );

    Hi,

I think I will hold off for the time being. Me and updates have never worked out. The last one cost me money to fix the theme. Maybe they will get some of the bugs works out of WP and add an option button for that.

That is another part of the problem with automatic updates.

I always say the people on the WordPress team are smart, but no brilliant. This further proves that.

The update system has failed to work on my sites ever since I hardened the server to deal with all of the attacks. A fully automated update system would take down all of my WordPress sites. I've also seen random update problems with other hosting companies.

A 3.7.1 bug fix was just released. That is about the quickest bug fix release I have ever seen.

I wonder how many sites that installed 3.7 went down when 3.7.1 was released.

My blogs did not go down with the 3.7 update.
And now, they did not go down with the 3.7.1 update.

    That is good news.

It really depends upon where the sites are hosted and whether or not you have had problems using the WordPress update system in the past.

I have not seen any update problems in the past with HostGator accounts, occasional problems with GoDaddy accounts, and a 100% failure rate for automatic updates with my VPS server due to the way I have it hardened and screwed down to prevent attacks.

The problem with adding this feature without a switch to turn it off and on is that one size does not fit all. I suspect there will be some serious problems with some hosting companies. The swiftness of the bug fix release is a bit suspicious. Normally, it takes about 2 weeks for a bugfix version to show up.

I believe it is the themes and the plugins.
Some people got to load up so many iffy themes and keep them for years.
Then themes, some are just not going to let wordpress update or the blog owner has so personalized the theme, it will crash and burn at first chance.

And hosting...too many people do not host direct with the host company, but go through a reseller.

I think it's a mistake for WordPress to keep all the plugins and themes in the admin area that are out of date or no longer used. They should be automatically deleted I think. The user can always download the item again if they want, and then get the latest version. Even if the item is not activated, there could be a security flaw waiting to be exploited.

In the case of all of the WordPress updates where I have experienced core file update crashes, very few had any old plugins.

I can see incompatible themes and plugins crashing after a core file update, but I don't think the themes and plugins will cause the core file update to crash. When they first came out with the update system, they claimed it would automatically roll back to the old version if it failed. I have never seen it do that for a core file update, but it does seem to work for plugins.

Really, up to the user to update themes and plugins if there are updates.
Also to remove them if no longer being used.

Would be crap if wordpress came up with an update that removed plugins!
    Or themes?
