I'm sure in a few years people will have ftp and uploading new versions will be something anybody is going to be comfortable doing, but yes, the hosting companies and wordpress should work on enabling the average blogger (non techie) to have an easier way to upgrade to the latest versions.
I am not sure about the number, but I would say that around 80 percent of bloggers out there have never used any ftp client before.
Supposedly WordPress 2.7's new update mechanism will make this all far more painless. :)
